The enigmatic Bayon Temple was the state temple of King Javerman VII, and was built near the end of the 12th Century. It is a mountain temple built to represent Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Hindu and Buddhist cosmology. The temple is best known for its 216 gigantic stone faces which adorn its 54 massive towers. Small wonder it is one of the most photographed sites in all of Cambodia.
